I just wanted to let you know I'm planning on joining Steven and the others going to the wastes for the expedition they're embarking on.

I'm going to be safe, promise. No big risks, okay?

[Norman knows that Peter, as his Designated Plus One, will show up in the Arcade if anythig DOES happen to him, so ... he knows which of his labs he's going to be working out of until the kid gets back. have they had that talk yet? hmm. if they haven't, he's sure not going to have it now.]

If you're going with Steven, I'm sure he'll make sure you're all as safe as you can possibly be out there. I hope you find something interesting. D'you need me to help you with getting any supplies, or anything? Or a ride to the college the morning of?

[that gets his attention, and not only because he's grateful for the change of subject. he reaches out to pet Molly a little more, because the shell has a really neat texture, and it's fun. he admits it. he loves all the Hill House critters, he's a sucker.]

What other sorts of training? You mean, like ... monster stuff?

I know for sure Sonic, Chiaki and Beat are going too. A lot of people signed up for this, so it'll be pretty safe I think.

A drive to the college in the morning would be really helpful. Only if you can anyway! I think I'm okay on supplies? I'm trying to not overpack so it doesn't hinder me walking around.

[She debates about being delicate, but she already said something unpleasant. Might as well continue.]

There have been monsters that demonstrate the proper way to butcher humans before. I think...you should remember when Mukuro did it on t.v. that time. I know there was someone else...outside the city... [Anyway.] Having a controlled, community setting might make it less stressful for monsters that might need to learn. Plus things like proper storage, and how long before something goes bad... Mukuro was really organized, when I saw inside her fridge. She would know the best way to make it less painful for the victim. She's really good at killing.

There are some really excellent chefs, too -- I could ask Mr. Taako if he would do classes with us sometime, and Reira has a recipe book that Mr. Arachne had worked on.

Thinking of a name that fits is going to be a little hard honestly. [Peter muses with a small scrunch of his snout, whiskers flicking a bit wildly in thought.] It needs to be something comforting though, because the soup kitchen is meant to help. Meant to be safe for everyone.

Oh, so half the family's going. :D

I'll bring both you and Sonic, then, if you'd like. And I can at least make you both a good breakfast so you don't start out hungry. When you let him know, find out what he'd like.

Y'mean Suki whatever his last name was? I can never quite remember. The one who made all the swords in the spider pit. ... Sure, I don't see why not. Chaboy is a pretty good cook, too. I can ask him if he could part with a recipe or two, next time I walk over to visit.

Honestly, this is starting to feel like a really weird field trip. Like I need you and Otto to sign my permission slip next, lol. It makes it feel a little less daunting?

I think Otto might want to drive with us too. I appreciate the drive over and breakfast. It'll definitely make things way easier. I'll shoot Steven a message and see if he wants anything too.

I've half a mind to write you one anyway, just to know what Steven's reaction to it would be.

Of course Otto's coming. I don't think he'd miss a chance to see you all off even if he was stuck as a nymph out on the lakeshore. He'd find a way: you're the son he always wanted, after all.

You're on the right track.

[he nods a few times, smiling just a little at the way Peter's whiskers twitch. there are so many of the little pooka habits and tics that Norman finds endearing, now that he's finally able to separate it all from his time in the research labs of his youth.

he sits in silence for a while as they both think about it. safety. food. warmth. it's making him think of the stereotypical images that get peddled around the holidays Norman Rockwell paintings, Currier and Ives prints. the kitchens at the turn of the century that still had open fireplaces, pots of soup hanging over open coals ... and the businessman's lightbulb goes on.]

What about Hearth?

A lot of confusion probably, that feels about right. Maybe he'd keep it as the first permission slip he ever got?

I'm glad both of you are coming. It feels nice. Like hearing that is still nice too.

[Peter folds his hands together absently, a gesture that's come up more recently. Something that's very rodent like he doesn't quite realize he's doing.

He visibly brightens at the suggestion. His ears perk up a little in turn.]

Hearth is really good. I was thinking of 'Home', but, that'd be to generic. Hearth is really good. I think people would like it too.

[Norman smiled a bit at the gesture. he'd noticed Peter's new habit, and thought it made him look particularly studious and thoughtful (and, yes, cute).]

It's warm, yanno? Makes you think of fireplaces, and those have always been safe gathering places. Seems like it'd fit.

Ha! Like new businesses and dollar bills! You might be right.

It's also just - associated with home, so, it's a lot better than F.E.A.S.T here at least. [Changing the name feels strange, like it'll distance them from May in a vague way, but it's a good thing too. It fits the peninsula better.]

Might make people more comfortable to actually use the soup kitchen more. Since, new people probably did balk at the name we picked originally.

Maybe it can be framed next to their first artifact found or something.

How is it she could hear that he said Suki instead of Tsuki? That she somehow knows he said Taco and not Taako? That the one he calls "Chaboy" is, in fact, the same person?

She manages to not bury her head in her hands, but she definitely has a headache now, and her eyes go a bit more dim at these revelations. She understands now. She understands about Sonic and his dunking on "boomers".]

...Ah, Dr. Rhodes and his husband, yes. That's right... [First of all. She was just so used to him being her boss.

Next on the list,] And yes, Mr. Arachne's name is Tsukikage. That's just his name. [If anything, she'd say Fuuma is his last name, but she's not even going to get into that. She's not sure it would matter.

[he's smiling right up until the bottom goes put from under him, like the first big drop of a rollercoaster. Peter gets to wait through a long pause. He had just been about to type "I don't have a son" - but then - why had he been so angry about - why was there a -

Norman freezes in terror as he grasps for memories he knows are rooted in things that happened. Galas. Company picnics. His Peter's graduation. Waking up on the floor to Bernard and - and - who? It was like someone had taken a bad eraser to his mind, and places weren't gone, only smudged. When he finally types again, it's terse more because his hands are shaking than anything else]

Peter, I can't remember him.

I had the same thought. God, Peter, I feel like such a heel. I can't believe it never occurred to me that the name was the reason it was so quiet. ... I thought ...

[he thought it was him]

You know what, no, never mind what I thought. We'll fix it, it'll be fine.

[Peter just kind of stares at the message a lot longer than he probably should, wondering what to even say.]

[he's suddenly getting the feeling that something he did offended her, or was wrong. but he doesn't know what. Norman's brow furrows as he looks around hesitantly, wondering if he's being dismissed.]

I mean, no one actually told us about it-? [Peter offers back with a vague tilt of his head. One of the dumb rat ears flopping a little to the side. Its a gentle enough reassurance. Peter doesn't quite know what Norman is thinking, but he can guess.] We can't fix something unless someone says something to us.

Heh. [seriously, he wonders, how can Peter be so wise and yet -- well. never mind.]

You've got a point there. Sometimes I forget, you know? Think I should have seen it regardless. But, "Hearth" it is. I'll get in touch with the folks I get the blankets and printed things from tomorrow to have it changed. Signs and all.
